Just what causes stress in our dogs and cats is not always obvious and may manifest itself in many forms. A new baby, trauma, moving house, travelling in a car, boredom/lack of stimulation, having the builders in, and separation anxiety are just a few of the simple causes of stress in our pets. When an animal is frequently placed in a situation where their body goes into survival mode, it takes time for the stress hormones involved in preparing the body for “ flight or fight” to dissipate, so repeated exposure to stressful situations means the body never gets a chance to return to a normal resting state. This will also effect other systems within the body as the body concentrates on dealing with the stress. Understanding your pets stress is the first step to helping it recover but they may need additional support.
